ROMAN HOUSES IN THE UNDERGROUND OF CELIO HILL
Have you ever entered a house in ancient Rome? Now you can do it! Under the church of Ss. Giovanni e Paolo centuries of oblivion have kept perfectly a Roman domus of the 3rd century AD, complete with frescoes! A character prays in the midst of monsters, goats and birds, a figure pours liquid to a naked girl lying between the waters: images not yet fully deciphered leave suggestive interpretative hypotheses open. The tour continues in the district of Celio, full of fascinating stories and mysterious. Why does it bring bad luck to sit in the table at 13? What is a ship doing in front of a church? It stands tacit and quiet in the greenery of Rome, yet the Celio owes its charm, which remained in the Middle Ages, to its isolation. The ruins of ancient Rome cannot be counted: the gladiator gym, Nero’s market, the temple of the emperor Claudius, houses, aqueducts, streets. Going through its slopes we will discover fantastic glimpses of a Rome that we thought had disappeared.
